5 Teeth Friendly Alternatives for Halloween 2017

What’s one word that comes to mind when you think of Halloween?

If you’re like most of us, you think candy — and for good reason: Americans spent an estimated $8.4 billion (yes, billion!) on the spooky holiday in 2016, much of that on candy. Giving lollipops, candy bars, taffy and jawbreakers to the adorable little trick-or-treaters that ring your doorbell on October 31 might be the tradition, but all of that candy does a number on their teeth.

This year, do something different by offering up some teeth-friendly alternatives for the little superheroes, princesses, mummies and witches that make their way to your doorstep. Bonus: These alternatives will definitely be a hit with the youngsters in your neighborhood, so you don’t have to worry about waking up to a toilet papered house!

Adults might not understand it, but slime is the most popular toy of 2017 with hundreds of Instagram accounts, YouTube channels and blogs dedicated to the stuff. You’ll be the most popular house on the block if you give out little containers of slime, like these little Halloween-themed slime containers that glow in the dark, and are available for less than the cost of regular candy bar.

A little too messy for your taste? You can give out other toys that kinda look like slime, including these little brain-shaped splat balls or little containers of putty, which are less expensive than most bags of candy.

Sugar-Free Gum

If you must give out candy for Halloween, make it sugar-free gum. Look for brands that have the seal of the American Dental Association: That means the gum is scientifically shown to protect the teeth by remineralizing tooth enamel or by reducing plaque acids, gingivitis and cavities.

Not sure which brand to buy? Most sugar-free options from Trident, Eclipse and Orbit have the seal, including Orbit For Kids Sugar-Free Gum in flavors like Bubblegum and Strawberry Banana.

Temporary Tattoos

We challenge you to find a child who doesn’t like temporary tattoos — it’s impossible! They love showing off their individual style with their “ink,” while parents love that they go away in a few days without scrubbing or mess.

You can find temporary tattoos almost anywhere for seriously low prices, including specialty stores online that sell tattoos that appeal to both boys and girls. Or, you can stick with the theme and get Halloween temporary tattoos.

Fidget Spinners

If slime is the most popular toy of 2017, fidget spinners are a close second. These little toys are shown to help kids stay occupied — and focused — on important tasks, plus they’re something of a status symbol for kids and tweens. The full-size versions can be pricey for Halloween giving, but these mini spinners can be purchased online for about a dollar a piece.

Activity Books

Encourage creativity instead of candy with Halloween-themed activity books that come with crayons attached. These inexpensive books include coloring pages, mazes, word searches and more — definitely enough to keep the kids’ minds off the sweet stuff!

The Only Limit is Your Imagination

There are a million-and-one things you can give this Halloween instead of candy, so don’t feel like you’re pushed into a corner this holiday. Parents — and dentists! — will be thankful.
